Thousands Come to Opening Israeli Funeral After Captive Bodies Were Repatriated

While Michel Illouz slowly made his way through the masses beneath the tall evergreens and tropical trees at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a urban center located 13 miles north of Tel Aviv, he showed appreciation to numerous participants as feasible.

Earlier he provided an open call to the Israeli public to join his family in mourning his young adult son, Guy, whose remains had been returned from Gaza on Monday.

Overwhelming Response

Countless individuals heeded the request. They occupied the avenues, followed the hearse carrying his mortal coil, and arrived at the memorial grounds in such substantial amounts that the initial arrangement to stage the ceremony indoors had to be discarded.

Rather, the ceremony was organized outdoors, set to the sound of singing birds.

Notable Occasion

This represented the opening memorial service since the last 20 living hostages were returned from Gaza, along with several deceased individuals. Another 21 of the deceased hostages are still unaccounted for, but at the very minimum this family now had a designated location to express sorrow and commemorate their son, according to friends.

Sorrowful Account

Guy Illouz, a musician and sound technician, had been shot in the back at the Nova musical gathering during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Before the tragedy unfolded, he had contacted his father from a concealed location to express his love; to bid farewell. He was seized, and based on those held with him, he later died from his trauma due to lack of treatment.

Family Perspective

A trusted companion of the Illouz family, Michelle, fifty years old, commented that it had been vitally significant to them that the public gathered today. The Illouz family members, including Guy's female relatives and brother, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of bereavement, after discovering of his passing in December of the prior year. But now that Guy was ultimately back with them, they desired "people around them again."

"This brings me comfort that you came," stated Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."

Father's Tribute

He spoke to his son. "My Guy-shuk," he uttered, using a affectionate nickname, "it's hard for me to envision the future without you. They grabbed you from me – they murdered you – they captured my essence and robbed my persona and destroyed my spirit and emotional core."

"I've been left hollow since that meaningless attack by those evil terrorists when they apprehended you and instructed you to turn around, and then simply fired two gratuitous rounds into your back."

Final Goodbye

"So I found myself this morning, traveling to Abu Kabir forensic institute to verify your remains and part ways. They took off the covering, and the first thing I observed was that familiar expression, that optimism, that calm demeanor and nobility that so characterized you."

"I touched you, tried to smell you, gently felt each part in your body. I observed you, I was in private with you, and yes, I felt with complete conviction that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've come back home. You've returned to your relatives' care, to all your close associates, and to the millions of citizens whose feelings your story impacted."

Parental Resilience

Throughout the initial segment of the ceremony, Illouz had dedicated all his efforts on comforting his younger children. He gently touched the locks of his female children, embraced his boy, demonstrated love and gathered his emotions for them. But then his feelings emerged.

Cherished Memories

"I'll miss so much journeying together through this country, feeling you, listening to your compositions, relaxing in mountainous areas and igniting the flame to create the drink the way only you mastered – 'Dad, do you see the coffee froth? You have to simmer it carefully, let the foam rise, then boil it again. Agitate the liquid with spinning actions' – and then your smile while enjoying the drink and your delight in every individual sip."

"Prior to my departure Abu Kabir today, I kept my promise. I looked at you, absorbed your presence one last time, and yes, I kissed you on the brow. I was able to see your beauty even in the condition in which you were repatriated."

Ultimate Expression

"My dear son, I love you so much, I love you. I will miss you every moment and minute of my existence. Find peace, my sweet one, rest after a journey of multiple seasons through unexplored dimensions to us. I hold you dear, my dear Guy, my cherished eldest child."
