A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near Verona to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals got detained at the site and a third person who escaped after the incident was found soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The head of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno told the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told local news, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
