A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.

The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which operates restaurants domestically and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna brings fortune," remarked the company president, a regular bidder at the annual first sale.

Dubbed the King of Tuna, this industry figure is noted for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated rapidly."

This most recent purchase tops his previous historic purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously known for sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for diners at the winner's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so lucky as the year begins," shared one elated patron.
