American Social Media Personality Fined Following Mass Electric Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge

New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation following a swarm of electric bicycle users gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during the busy commute on a weekday.

The Incident: A Prohibited Ride

A gathering of approximately 40 people riding e-bikes and motorcycles travelled along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders then turned around and traveled through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on Wednesday.

Police said they did not immediately pursue the group out of concerns for public safety but rather found the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.

Fines Imposed for Content Creator

Later in the week, police stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, 26, with two traffic infringement notices for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge incident. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The personality is said to have over 3.4m subscribers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on Instagram.

Creator's Response

The content creator gave comments to a local publication recently following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a bad reputation.

"I accept the blame. It was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he said. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to abide by the rules and standards of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to say hi near the bridge."

"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."

National Debate on E-Bike Regulation

The increase of e-bikes on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."

"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he stated. "We must ensure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] police are given the authority to take strong action, to confiscate them, to destroy them, to destroy them."

NSW reported 226 injuries related to electric bikes in 2024. But, in the initial half of the following year, that number surged to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
